Улюблений день в “Надії” (My Favorite Day at “Nadiya”)

Я  завжди приходжу в “Надію”,коли маю вільний час. Щодня  в товаристві проходять різні гуртки та заходи. Всі дні дуже гарні і цікаві,бо щодня дізнаюся для себе щось новеньке. Сьогодні я хочу написати про  свято Хеловін ,який відбувся нещодавно, бо в мене від цього свято багато вражень і задоволення,яке залишиться надовго. На святі розфарбовували обличчя,була кімната жахів в якій було дуже страшно,але водночас і цікаво та перегляд фільму. І найулюбленіше те,що була дискотека ,бо я люблю танцювати. Я на цьому святі навеселилася і натанцювалася досхочу. Побільше б такий свят. Дуже дякую!!!

I always come to ” Nadiya ” when I have free time. Every day there are various clubs and events here. All days at “Nadiya” are wonderful and interesting, and everyday you can learn something new. Today I want to write about the Halloween celebration, which took place recently, because this holiday experience was a lot of fun and the memories will remain for a long time. The celebration had face painting, a haunted room which was very scary and exciting at the same time, and a film. And my favorite part was the dancing because I love dancing . At this event, I had lots of fun and danced plenty.  There is only a little more time until the holiday season. Thank you very much!

В товариство я ходжу давно. А одним із улюбленим днем для мене є середа,бо в цей день нас вчать  грати великий теніс,бо я його не вміла і не знала про це нічого. А тепер знаю, як правиль тримати ракетку,як подавати і відбивати. Дуже гарні інструктори,які підійдуть і покажуть як правильно треба це зробити. Після кожного заняття я задоволена іду додому. Дякую вам за такий гарний гурток.

I have been coming to “Nadiya” for a long time. One of my favorite days is Wednesday, because on this day we are taught to play tennis.  I could not play tennis and did not know anything about it.  Now I know how to hold the racket and hit a ball back and forth. There were very good instructors who came and showed us how it should be done. After each session, I go home satisfied. Thank you for such a good club.

Я нечасто приходжу в товариство “Надія”,але за всі дні, які я відвідувала,мені подобалися комп’ютерні курсу. Тому,що я не вміла користуватися добре комп’ютером ,а тепер набагато більше знаю і умію,можу  без допомоги намалювати чи надрукувати  вже сама.Дякую!

I do not come to “Nadiya” often, but of all the days I have visited, I liked the computer course best. Because I did not know how to use a computer well, and now I know much more and can draw and type on my own. Thank you!

Truly committed

It seems that no matter the day or time, you will find volunteers at Nadiya.  I have gotten used to seeing volunteers working on souvenirs or other projects until as late at 11pm here during weekdays.  Saturdays there is always a group that gathers to bring the kids swimming, and sometimes to assist with sorting second-hand clothes.  But Sunday is typically a day of rest.

I was not expecting to see any activity yesterday since it was Sunday, but our volunteers are relentless.  Nadiya is planning a trip to the sea in a few weeks, and would like to include as many of our members as possible.  Since many of the youth at Nadiya are unable to find work and are living off a very modest stipend, a trip to the sea can be a huge financial burden.  This is why our volunteers and youth decided to get up early on a Sunday morning to ask for donations in exchange for handicrafts made by our children and youth with disabilities.

I was lucky enough to be invited along for this trip to Shidnytsia (Східниця) to see these volunteers in action.  This town is an hour away in the mountains.  It was wonderful to see another beautiful town in Ukraine, but it was even more wonderful to be able to see how passionate our volunteers are about Nadiya.  Not only were they able to do some fundraising in order to send out some of the youth to the sea, but they also provided valuable information to the public about Nadiya and persons living with disabilities.  Below are some pictures from the day.

In other news, Iryna (Director of Nadiya) and I will be going to Kiev today for 4 days to attend a Peace Corps Training Session.  We will be learning about organizational structure and hope to bring some new ideas back to Nadiya with us.

зустріч Лілія/ Meet Lily

Я, Лілія, є волонтером Дрогобицького добровільного товариства захисту дітей та молоді з інвалідністю. В товаристві «Надія » лише два місяці, а все почалось з того, що університет в якому я навчаюсь направив мене сюди як студента – практиканта, оскільки  моя майбутня професія соціальний педагог. Пройшовши практику в товаристві «Надія» я вирішила стати волонтером тут, адже це новий досвід, це знайомство з новими та цікавими людьми, це можливість допомогти та зрозуміти, це нові знання та ідеї, це новий погляд на життя. Я сподіваюсь, що в майбутньому це допоможе мені знайти правильну дорогу у моєму житті.

Оскільки тут є майстерня ручної праці я часто буваю в ній і допомагаю у виробленні різноманітних виробів, сувенірів з тканини, скла, бісеру тощо. Будучи волонтером тут я б хотіла навчитися правильно і цікаво організовувати свята, заходи, різноманітні тренінги та бесіди.

Зазвичай у вільний час я читаю книжки, найбільше мені подобаються книги з цікавим сюжетом, які будуть корисні в житті. Я  також люблю працювати за комп’ютером  та гуляти вулицями рідного міста.

I, Lily, am a volunteer at Nadiya- Drohobych Voluntary Society to Protect Children and Youth with Disabilities. I have been at Nadiya for two months, and it all started when my university sent me here for an internship.  I am studying to becoming a educator and possibly professor in the field of social services. After I completed my internship at Nadiya, I decided to continue volunteering here because it is a new experience to become familiar with new and interesting people, an opportunity to help and understand through new knowledge and ideas, and a new outlook on life. I hope that in future it will help me find the right path for my life.
Since there is a workshop for handicrafts, I often am in it and helping to create various products and souvenirs made ​​of cloth, glass beads and other materials. As a volunteer, I would like to learn how to organize interesting holiday activities, and a variety of workshops and trainings.
In my free time, I usually read books on interesting subjects which will be useful in life. I also like to work at the computer and walk about my city.

Я, Володимир Валентинович, є членом Дрогобицького добровільного товариства захисту дітей та молоді з інвалідністю. Але, також я є волонтером, допомагаю організовувати і проводити різні заходи, конкурси, відповідаю за музичний супровід усіх програм. Дуже часто є ведучим концертів, є активним учасником студії художньої та народної творчості. Ще ми разом з друзями допомагаємо у проведенні виставок – продажів виробів із майстерні ручної праці. Найбільше мене захоплює участь у тренінгах та навчальних програм у товаристві, у інтеграційних таборах.
Свій вільний час я дуже люблю проводити з друзями, катаюсь на велосипеді, працюю за комп’ютером. Я дуже люблю дружній колектив та хорошу компанію.

I, Volodymr, am a member of Drohobych Voluntary Society for the Protection of Children and Youth with Disabilities. But I am also a volunteer helping to organize and conduct various activities and contests, along with all the music programs. Very often the host of our concerts is an active participant in studio art and handicrafts. Together with our friends, we help in conducting exhibitions and selling products from manual labor workshops. The most exciting part of my training and educational programs here at Nadiya are the integration camps.

In my spare time, I like spending with friends, riding my bicycle,and working on the computer. I love the friendly staff and good company here.

American Independence Day/ День Незалежності США

Yesterday was a proud day for me as an American, but it was strange to be in Ukraine.  Usually the 4th of July, our day of Independence, is a time to spent eating and drinking with friends and family.  I was lucky that everyone here at Nadiya was excited to celebrate this holiday with me.

I spent most of the day in L’viv retrieving groceries from various Metro and enjoying the ride while documents were submitted in the city.  When I arrived back to Drohobych, I was greeted by everyone in red, white, and blue–American colors!!  We proceeded to celebrate the 4th much like I would have done at home, by eating and drinking together while listening to American music.

When we were done eating, we played some traditional American games.  The games included a water balloon toss and a watermelon seed spitting contest.  The only thing missing yesterday was fireworks!  I am sure I will get to see plenty of fireworks in August when we all celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day!

One thing that really stood out yesterday was the fact that everyone at Nadiya was so willing to celebrate an American holiday with me.  I felt a lot of love in the room as they toasted to America saying that they were happy to celebrate with me as my family.  I am continually overwhelmed by the amount of love I feel here at Nadiya.  If you are ever in the area, you should stop by and see for yourself!

День Незалежності США

Учорашній день був приводом для моєї особистої гордості як американки, але доволі дивно відзначати це свято в Україні. Зазвичай 4 липня, наш День Незалежності,  ̶  це час для частування їжею і напоями разом із друзями та сім’єю.  Мені пощастило, що кожен у ,,Надії” з радістю приєднався до відзначення цього свята разом зі мною.

Більшу частину цього дня я провела у Львові на закупівлі продуктів харчування у супермаркетах типу Метро, а також мала можливість насолоджуватися проїздом через місто під час подачі документів. Коли я повернулася у Дрогобич, мене привітали працівники зодягнені у червоні, білі і сині американські барви!! Ми приступили до святкування Дня Незалежності так, ніби це відбувалося вдома: ми разом їли і пили, слухаючи американську музику.

Після закінчення трапези, ми почали грати у традиційні американські ігри, такі як жбурляння надувних кульок наповнених водою  і змагання в запльовуванні насінин кавуна у довжину. Єдина річ, котрої нам учора бракувало, – це феєрверки! Я впевнена, що ще побачу багато феєрверків у серпні під час святкування Дня Незалежності України!

От що дійсно виділялось учора, так це бажання кожного у ,,Надії” відзначати американське свято разом зі мною. У кімнаті панувало відчуття любові, коли присутні виголошували тости Америці, стверджуючи, що вони були щасливі разом зі мною у святкуванні, як моя сім’я. Мене постійно переповнює та кількість любові, яку я відчуваю тут у ,,Надії”. Якщо ви будете перебувати неподалік, загляньте до нас і переконайтеся у цьому самі!

Hello from Nadiya!/ Вітання з ,,Надії”!

We all hope for the best out of life, and I am happy to say that I have been granted an amazing opportunity to work with Nadiya, an NGO working with kids and youth with disabilities in Western Ukraine.  Everyday is filled with new opportunities and challenges as I integrate into Ukrainian society as an American Peace Corps Volunteer.  Even through the challenges, I am aware of the future hope surrounding me.  Nadiya translates into the English word hope, and I think it is the perfect name for this organization.

While my challenges generally involve integrating to a new culture, everyday I am surrounded by amazing people who are struggling to integrate into their own society.  In the month that I have been here, I have only just begun to see the societal barriers that affect the everyday lives of the children and youth with disabilities.  At the same time, I have also seen numerous talents of these young people.  These talents have included everything from English Speaking, horse training, and break dancing.  I know there are so many more talents that will emerge the longer I am here, and I can’t wait to see what else comes to light!

My time with Nadiya has only just begun.  I am looking forward to spending the next two years with an organization that I am happy to call my family!

Вітання з ,,Надії”!

Ми усі сподіваємося на краще у житті, і мені приємно повідомити, що мені випала чудова нагода попрацювати у недержавній організації ,,Надія”, яка займається дітьми і молоддю з особливими потребами у західній Україні. Кожен день сповнений новими можливостями і викликами, оскільки я інтегруюсь в українське суспільство як американський волонтер Корпусу Миру. Незважаючи на труднощі, я усвідомлюю майбутню надію, яка мене оточує. Саме так перекладається українською англійське слово «hope», і я вважаю, що така назва чи не найкраще пасує цій організації.

Хоча коло моїх питань зазвичай включає інтеграцію у нову культуру, я щодня оточена прекрасними людьми, які і самі прагнуть інтегруватись у власне суспільство. Упродовж місяця, який я вже тут провела, я тільки почала бачити суспільні бар’єри, котрі впливають на повсякденне життя дітей і молоді з особливими потребами. У той же час, я також помітила численні таланти, якими наділені ці молоді люди. Вони включають різноманіття занять: від англійської мови до прогулянок верхи на коні і брейкдансу. Я знаю, що чим довше я тут перебуватиму, тим більше талантів я зможу побачити. З нетерпінням чекатиму все нових відкриттів!

Моя співпраця з ,,Надією” лише щойно розпочалася. Із задоволенням очікую на проведення наступних двох років у цій організації, яку я щаслива назвати моєю сім’єю.
